Guwahati, Aug 7: A top Ulfa(I) leader and three other cadres of the banned outfit have surrendered to authorities in Nagaland.
The top leader has been identified as Janardan Gogoi alias Jit Asom, a native of Tinsukia district in Assam and a key member of the Paresh Baruah-led Ulfa(I). Gogoi surrendered in Nagaland and has since been handed over to the Charaideo district police in Assam for interrogation.
In a separate incident, three other Ulfa(I) cadres surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Shanglangso village in Mon district of eastern Nagaland. They have been identified as Dweepjyoti Saikia (Karbi Anglong), Anthony Moran (Tinsukia), and Paragjyoti Chetia (Charaideo).
“They entered India and surrendered before the Assam Rifles in Mon district. They have been brought to the Charaideo police station for further investigation. One more Ulfa(I) leader also surrendered in Nagaland but hasn’t yet reached Charaideo. He has been identified as Jit Asom of Tinsukia,” said Charaideo SP Surjeet Singh Panesar.
Security forces have intensified anti-insurgency operations along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh-Nagaland border following intelligence inputs about possible militant attacks ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
Sources indicated that a group of Ulfa(I) militants had recently crossed into Assam and Arunachal Pradesh with potential plans to target key government installations. Security has been heightened to counter any such threats.
