Agartala, Nov 5: Senior Congress MLA and former Minister Sudip Roy Barman on Wednesday slammed Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, terming his recent move to form the ‘One North East’ alliance as a “political gimmick” designed to divert attention from his unfulfilled promises under the Greater Tipraland demand and the Tiprasa Accord.
Reacting to the joint declaration made in New Delhi a day earlier by Pradyot along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and other tribal leaders from the region, Roy Barman questioned the relevance and intent behind bringing together various indigenous political parties under a single platform.

Speaking to reporters, Roy Barman said, “These are strategies to distract people from failures. I don’t see how uniting a few indigenous parties of the Northeast helps achieve the objectives of Greater Tipraland or the tripartite agreement,”.
“It looks more like bargaining politics to secure funds and sustain the party machinery,” he said.
The veteran Congress leader, who earlier served as Tripura’s Health Minister and has been associated with the TMC, BJP, and Congress, said Pradyot’s initiative has shifted focus away from the real concerns of Tripura’s tribal communities.
Roy Barman who always argued the Tiprasa Accord “vague and directionless,” alleging it lacks any concrete roadmap or clear articulation of the indigenous population’s demands.
“Almost two years have passed since it was signed, but not a single tangible outcome has emerged. The Centre had assured implementation within six months — yet nothing has been done,” he added.

Roy Barman also questioned the logic of linking the Greater Tipraland issue — specific to Tripura — with the unification of tribal parties from other northeastern states like Meghalaya, Assam, and Nagaland.
“If Tipra Motha’s demand is for Greater Tipraland, how can people from Meghalaya or Nagaland relate to it? Every state has distinct indigenous issues. This alliance has no constitutional or practical connection — it only confuses people and raises false hopes,” he remarked.
The Congress MLA maintained that while he supports initiatives that genuinely benefit Tripura’s indigenous people, he believes this latest move of Pradyot is more about gaining negotiation leverage ahead of the TTAADC and long-delayed Village Committee elections.
“Running a political party requires funds, and this seems like another tactic to stay relevant after NEDA became inactive. It’s bargaining politics, nothing more,” Roy Barman alleged. “Still, if it truly brings progress to the indigenous people of Tripura, I will be the happiest person.”
Roy Barman’s strong remarks have added fresh intensity to Tripura’s political discourse following Pradyot Kishore’s collaboration with regional leaders under the ‘One North East’ banner, which seeks to unify indigenous political forces across the Northeast.
