Tura, June 26: Tura joined the global observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking 2025 on Thursday, pledging a united front against substance abuse and advocating for a drug-free future.
Under the theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All!”, the event, jointly organized by the District Social Welfare Office and the District Sankalp-Hub for Empowerment of Women, was held at Captain William’s School in Tura.

Madonna Onasis T. Sangma, District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), provided an in-depth overview of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. She highlighted this national initiative, launched in August 2020, as a dedicated effort to reduce drug demand through widespread public awareness campaigns, including extensive outreach in schools and communities, emphasizing the profound dangers of drug addiction. She also drew a parallel to the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign, noting its role in empowering girls, which in turn contributes to building resilient communities.
Florina Boro, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tura, delivered a crucial address on the collective responsibility in combating drug abuse. Directly appealing to parents and institutional heads, Boro underscored the importance of diligently monitoring students’ behaviour and daily observations to enable early intervention in cases of substance abuse. She informed attendees about the district administration’s committee, which actively conducts various awareness activities related to illegal trafficking, affirming the vital role of community involvement in prevention efforts.

The program also featured insightful presentations from key speakers. Amesa Chesrame S. Sangma, Counsellor at the Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF) of Tura Civil Hospital, shared invaluable information about various drugs and their devastating impact on individuals’ lives. John Cronin Ch. Sangma, Deputy Chief Legal Defence Council, DLSA, Tura, provided legal insights, emphasizing the critical importance of avoiding illegal activities related to drugs. Krison R. Marak, Additional Superintendent of Police, Tura, reiterated the law enforcement perspective on the drug menace.
The event culminated in a pledge-taking ceremony under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, where attendees collectively committed to a drug-free future, fostering a strong sense of unity and shared resolve among all participants.
The program also celebrated artistic talent with a prize distribution for winners of the Poster Writing Competition, further encouraging engagement and awareness among the youth.
