Tura, June 5: Tura celebrated World Environment Day with a series of tree plantation and cleanliness drives across the town and its outskirts, reflecting strong community commitment to the global theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

Multiple organisations, schools, student groups and government agencies came together to promote environmental protection and raise awareness about the dangers of plastic waste.

At William Point, Hawakhana, the District Social Welfare Office and Mother’s Union led a cleanliness and plantation drive under the slogan “Let’s Keep Our Planet Green & Clean.” Students from Smallville Secondary School, riders’ clubs, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, YWCA, and ICWM joined hands to clean public spaces and later continued the plantation at Misimagre, Rongram Block.

Dr Angela Ingty, YWCA Tura President, called plastic pollution one of the most dangerous threats to the environment and urged people to stop using plastic altogether.

Meanwhile, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Central Executive Committee, carried out a tree plantation campaign in schools around Rongkhon, including Don Bosco School, where over 50 saplings were planted. The effort, supported by GSU Vice President Roberth Momin, also included student interactions promoting eco-consciousness.

The CRPF’s 120 Battalion observed the day with a special drive titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” at Agillangre Govt. LP School.

Over 320 saplings were planted by officials, students, and Nokmas in the presence of dignitaries like SP Abraham T. Sangma and school principal Namseng G. Momin. A student, Salgora R Marak, recited a poem titled “The World is Green”, celebrating nature’s beauty and importance.

The Tura Hindu Samshan Bhumi Committee, in partnership with the District Administration and MBDA, planted around 100 saplings at Mokshadham near Sashan Kali Mandir. Advisor D.K. Newar expressed hope to turn the cremation site into a green tourist attraction, while encouraging paper use over plastic.

Meanwhile in Mellim under South West Garo Hills, the Social Forestry Division Tura and the Mellim Bee Keepers Society hosted an awareness programme at the MFC Building.

Schoolchildren, Nokmas, church leaders, and officials participated in talks, performances, and a roadside plantation.

M.J.A. Sangma, Conservator of Forests, cited cases where animals consumed plastic waste and stressed the urgent need to switch to sustainable habits.
