Tura, Nov 20: Two labourers lost their lives after five workers were buried in a sudden earth collapse while cutting a recently-concreted hill slope near the Bokmagre petrol station in Tura on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 a.m., when a large portion of the unstable hillside gave way without warning, trapping the labourers under tonnes of soil and debris.
Emergency teams from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police rushed to the spot and launched an intensive rescue operation. One worker had already been pulled out by locals before the teams arrived, while three others were rescued by the SDRF under challenging conditions.
However, two labourers did not survive. One of them, identified as Saijal Haque of South Salmara Mancachar, Assam, was recovered lifeless from beneath the collapsed earth. Another rescued worker later succumbed to his injuries at Tura Civil Hospital, taking the death toll to two.
The remaining survivors are undergoing treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.
The collapse drew a large crowd of residents who gathered as rescue efforts intensified. Jude R.T. Sangma, CEO of DDMA West Garo Hills, was present at the site monitoring the operation. Recovery efforts concluded around 12:30 p.m., after rescuers faced increasing risk due to the unstable upper layers of soil.
Authorities are expected to conduct a site inspection to determine the cause of the collapse and review safety protocols at similar earth-cutting and construction locations across the district.
