Imphal, April 18: Two persons, including a retired Army man, were killed in a firing incident along National Highway-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Saturday, triggering fresh tension in the region—just a day after Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s outreach visit.
The attack took place in the afternoon near T.M. Kasom village, when unidentified armed assailants opened fire on vehicles travelling from Imphal to Ukhrul. The sudden ambush sparked panic among commuters, and at least three vehicles were damaged.
One of the deceased has been identified as SW Chinaoshang (46), a resident of Tashar village and a retired soldier of the Naga Regiment, who died on the spot.
Another traveller, Yaruingam Vashum (42) of Kharasom village, who sustained critical injuries in the attack, later succumbed, taking the death toll to two.
Security forces rushed to the site soon after the incident and launched combing operations to trace those responsible. While suspicion points to the involvement of armed militants, there has been no official confirmation so far.
The incident comes at a sensitive time, barely a day after the Chief Minister’s visit to Ukhrul under his hill outreach programme. During the visit, Singh interacted with villagers across multiple locations, stressing peace-building, reconciliation, and a return to normalcy.
He had also reviewed key infrastructure projects, including the upgradation of the NH-150 (Ukhrul–Kohima road), aimed at improving connectivity and economic prospects in the hill district.
The latest attack, however, has cast a shadow over these efforts, underscoring the fragile security situation and persistent tensions in the region.
