Tynsong criticises KHADC over Rani area inspection, says move risked border tensions

Must read

Shillong, Aug 2: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong has expressed concerns over the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council’s (KHADC) recent inspection in the Rani area, which falls within the disputed territory between Meghalaya and Assam.

According to him, the KHADC should not have conducted the inspection without informing the government, especially since the boundary dispute is yet to be resolved.

The Rani area is part of the long-standing border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam. The Joint Regional Committee (JRC) from both states has not yet visited the area, and the boundary demarcation is still pending.

Tynsong emphasized that the KHADC’s actions could have escalated tensions in the area.

“In fact that meeting proposed to be held was only to verify whether that particular place belongs to Jirang syiemship or belongs to the Lyngdohship of Sohiong.
I personally feel that the mistake done by the KHADC was since the boundary of the Hima is still not resolved, I personally feel the KHADC should not go for inspection. They should have call for a meeting within the office itself, discuss and collect all the papers, then ultimately jointly not only to the Lyngdohship of Sohiong but you better call even the Syiem of Nongspung and the Syiem of Jirang go for joint inspection, I think that must be the way,” he told reporters.

“But with regards to the incident that had happened, thank God from the government side we had clamped section 144 CrPC otherwise it would have been a different story altogether,” Tynsong added.

Tynsong confirmed that talks are ongoing between officials from both states, including the Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police.

“Talks are on. Who said there is no talk? In the level of the district deputy commissioner and SP and even at the level of ADM revenue talk is there but it is not the political talk, it is official talk to maintain peace and tranquility be it in the block I or II or in the entire state of Meghalaya, we have directed that way,” he said.

“Even in the chief minister meeting and chief secretary meeting, that was a clear direction given by both states. That is why now whatever stray incident happened immediately it was resolved and ultimately it was under control,” the deputy CM added.
