Shillong, Mar 25: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday said there are some sections of the people who do not want the long pending boundary dispute to be resolved.
“I am scared as some section of the people… it seems they don’t want (the border dispute) to come to a solution,” Tynsong said while referring to recent opposition against the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Meghalaya and Assam for resolving 6 out of 12 areas of difference.
He, however, said that the majority of the people of the state wanted that the long pending issue which has been lingering for the past 50 years, be resolved once and for all.
Tynsong also asserted the need for the people, especially the stakeholders to understand the ground reality.
“By ground reality it means a middle way has to be there. Some plus, some minus, we cannot avoid that that is the ground reality but it should not be at the cost of Assam alone or it should not be at the cost of Meghalaya alone,” he said.
“We are firm on this particular issue otherwise it is better that we should not take up this issue then let it continue again for another 50 years. If it happens again for another 50 years, I am very sure our next generation will curse us. So I think we have to accept the reality. Enough is enough, let us take a stand and let us solve it once and for all so that the next 50 years and another 100 years our generation will stay peacefully and will not have any confusion anymore,” he said.
Asked, Tynsong said he is yet to know what would be the outcome of the much-awaited meeting with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 29, to finalize the MoU signed between the two states. “Let us meet him then we will get back to you,” he said.
Stating that a joint survey has to be carried out by the Survey of India, the deputy CM however said, “Until and unless decision is taken at the highest level I cannot say anything on that right now. Let us see on March 29 what the outcome of the meeting is.”
