Shillong, Oct 13: The East Khasi Hills police have taken swift action in a case involving a 15-year-old girl who went missing from Umpling and was later found at her boyfriend’s house.
According to SP Vivek Syiem, the girl and the boy had been in a relationship for nearly two weeks and she had left home on her own to meet him.
“We have registered a case of abduction and wrongful confinement, after we found that the boy is in the age of majority and she is a minor and the boy is being produced in court. The girl has been medically examined and handed over to her family,” Syiem told reporters on Monday.
Asked, Syiem emphasised the need for parents to talk to their children, understand their online activities and guide them to prevent such incidents.
“Parents have the wisdom of trees, and they can guide their children better if they establish a strong bond with them,” he said.
The East Khasi Hills police have been working to enhance child safety through various measures, including coordination with local stakeholders and community leaders, installation of CCTVs in public places, guest houses, and businesses, patrolling by police and Village Defense Parties (VDPs) and encouraging VDPs to work in tandem with the police
Syiem appreciated the Shillong Smart City initiative, which has helped the police through the installation of CCTVs in various locations.
“Crimes are mostly committed in places that are not centrally located, and CCTVs have been helpful in such cases,” he said.
The police have warned against making false complaints, particularly in cases like the recent revelation of school girls concocting stories of being injected with syringes and robbed.
“We urge parents to monitor their children and refrain from making false reports, which can waste our time and energy,” Syiem said.
