Williamnagar, Feb 26: The Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey on Thursday held a comprehensive review meeting on the implementation of centrally sponsored schemes in East Garo Hills at the Williamnagar Circuit House.
The meeting was conducted in the presence of Deputy Commissioner R.P. Marak and attended by Additional Deputy Commissioners, Block Development Officers, Executive Engineers of PHE and PWD, officials from ICDS, Social Welfare, Food and Civil Supplies, the CEO of Williamnagar Municipal Board, the District School Education Officer, District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC), and representatives from Agriculture, Health, Horticulture, and other government departments.
During the review, the Minister assessed the sector-wise performance of various departments and examined the progress of key centrally sponsored schemes aimed at infrastructure development, livelihood enhancement, education, health services, and welfare initiatives in the district. He emphasized the importance of transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the execution of government programmes. Assuring full support from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, he stated that necessary steps would be initiated to address bottlenecks and challenges faced by the district administration. He urged officials to work with dedication and coordination to accelerate development and ensure that benefits reach the grassroots level.
The Minister, who arrived in Williamnagar on February 25, also undertook field visits to assess ground-level implementation of schemes. He visited a strawberry farm at Rongap Mikgilsimgre, where he interacted with local growers and enquired about their experiences with government support programmes. The farmers expressed satisfaction with the assistance received and appreciated the government’s initiatives. However, some growers requested additional support in the form of power tillers and water pumps to enhance productivity. In response, the Minister directed the Deputy Commissioner and the Horticulture Department to examine the matter and extend feasible assistance. He also encouraged farmers to opt for solar-powered pumps available under government subsidy schemes to promote sustainable agriculture.
As part of his tour, the Minister visited the DCIC Emporium in Williamnagar to review local entrepreneurship initiatives. He later inspected the Eklavya Model Residential School at Samanda Rikwarenggre, where he interacted with the school authorities and teaching staff to understand the functioning and challenges of the institution.
The Minister further visited the Nengmandalgre Fish Sanctuary and the Nengmandalgre Honey Processing Unit and Functional Pack House, which was sanctioned under the District Mineral Foundation (DMF). He reviewed their operations and highlighted the importance of promoting fisheries, apiculture, and allied sectors to strengthen rural livelihoods and boost the district’s economy.
