Shillong, Sept 13: A school student almost died from drowning on Wednesday when she fell into a river at Lawkhla Mawlong Village under Mawphlang Constituency. However, the local residents present near the river reacted swiftly and saved the young girl.
It was learnt that the young girl was attempting to cross the river, but failed to gauge the depth and current of the river. She was swept away by the strong currents and almost lost her life.
The Sordar of the village, Swotsharlin Marbaniang, has urged the government to construct a bridge to ensure the safety of the local residents.
He added that during the tenure of the late MLA (L) SK Sunn, a plan was prepared for the construction of the bridge, but the project has been on hold since his passing.
