Guwahati, Feb 20: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said Assam would be made flood-free and the problem of illegal infiltration eradicated within the next five years if the BJP is voted back to power.
Shah announced while inaugurating the second phase of the Vibrant Village Programme at Nathanpur village in Assam’s Barak Valley.
“Today, we are officially launching Vibrant Village Programme-II. Through this initiative, we will provide comprehensive development to border villages and ensure they have facilities on par with those in any other part of the country. This has been possible because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Shah said.
Highlighting the government’s vision, Shah said Nathanpur would not be known merely for its proximity to the border but for its development achievements.
“This village will become one of the first villages of India — not because it lies near the border, but because it will be number one in education, employment generation, roads, telecommunications, electricity — number one in everything,” he said.
The Union Minister stated that the Centre has allocated ₹6,900 crore under Vibrant Village Programme-II for the development of 334 blocks and 1,954 villages across 17 states. In Assam, nine districts, 26 blocks and 140 villages have been covered under the scheme.
He added that all basic amenities in these 140 villages would be upgraded to match national standards.
“There was a time when border villages were called the ‘last villages’ and lacked basic facilities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided that border villages should be treated as the ‘first villages’ of the country. Now, these villages will lead in roads, sanitation, drinking water, communications, employment and education,” Shah said, adding that 140 villages along the Assam-Bangladesh border will benefit under the programme.
He reiterated that tackling floods and curbing illegal infiltration would remain top priorities if the BJP secures another term in the state.
