Shillong, Ocyt 31: Twenty-two people, includng minors were rescued after a violent mob of approximately 200 people gheraoed the residence of Ham Shangpliang in Khliehshnong Sohra last night, threatening to destroy and set fire to the house.
The incident was sparked by allegations of witchcraft made by a minor boy who claimed to be under a spell cast by Shangpliang.
Nine individuals identified as instigators of the crowd have been arrested so far.
According to police, more arrests are expected.
Preliminary on-site inquiry suggested that the incident arose from claims made by a minor boy who alleged that he had “visions” of Shri Ham Shangpliang and believed himself to be under a witchcraft spell (ai ksuid) from the latter, police said.
These unverified and unfounded allegations appear to have triggered fear, confusion, and mob mobilisation among certain residents, culminating in an unlawful assembly and violent threats, they said.
Police teams and magistrates from Sohra responded promptly, using tear gas and stunt grenades to disperse the aggressive crowd and create a secure corridor for evacuation.
Reinforcements from Shillong were required to stabilize the situation.
The combined efforts of the police and magistrates enabled the safe evacuation of 22 people, including minors, who were rescued and taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical examination.
Eight police personnel were injured in the violence.
Police have arrested nine individuals identified as instigators of the crowd, and more arrests are expected.
A case has been registered at Sohra Police Station.
In a statement, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, stated the police team, along with the BDO of Shella and SDPO Sohra, arrived at the location and attempted to control the unruly crowd. However, the mob began pelting stones at the police and SOT, and snatched riot gears from their possession.
“In the course of investigation, 9 (nine) accused persons of the village have been arrested,” Syiem said, adding, “Spreading rumors or inciting people of being Menshohnoh is a Criminal Offence as it has the potential to lead to loss of innocent lives and property.”
The police used minimal force to disperse the mob, rescuing 21 family members, including minors, who were later sent to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical assistance.
A case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
