Agartala, July 18: Nine citizens of Bangladesh were apprehended by the police in North Tripura district for illegally entering Tripura. The detained group, consisting of three men, three women, and three children, was enroute to Gujarat via Guwahati.

The arrest took place on Monday evening at the inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) in Dharmanagar town, near the Assam border. The Bangladeshis were caught while awaiting transportation to Guwahati, intending to continue their journey to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, by train.

Shibu Ranjan Das, the Officer Incharge (IC) of Dharmanagar police station, stated, “Acting on information received from the public regarding a group of Bangladeshi citizens at Dharmanagar ISBT, our team promptly arrived at the scene. We found three men, three women, and three children who confessed to being Bangladeshi citizens and admitted to illegally entering Indian territory without valid documents. We have initiated a special case against them, and an investigation is currently underway. One of the accused is unwell, and we will present them in court.”

The individuals who were arrested have been identified as Sheikh Saheb Ali (68), Billal Sheikh (34), Sharmin Begam (28), Atikur Rehaman (40), Sainika Begam (21), Hashi Begam (25), and three children.

Sainika Begam, one of the arrested women, said, “We were on our way to Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where my father-in-law and mother-in-law have been residing for a long time. I entered illegally and was heading to Ahmedabad.”

One of the apprehended men reportedly suffers from a serious illness and is disabled.

Sheikh Saheb Ali, the eldest among those arrested, explained, “We crossed the Tripura border from Bangladesh illegally on Sunday, paying a tout seven thousand rupees per adult. In total, there were seven adults and three children. We arrived here by train but missed our connection to Guwahati, so we were getting bus tickets to reach Guwahati and continue to Ahmedabad. My son lives there, and I recently discovered that he got married and settled down. I had visited him in the past. We came for medical treatment, including my eye surgery.”

It has been reported that another Bangladeshi individual, Araj Miah, managed to escape the area and police have launched a massive raid to apprehend him.

Regular arrests of Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingyas occur as they reportedly utilize the state as a transit route to travel to other parts of the country.

Despite the presence of border guards and ongoing efforts to fence the remaining 50-kilometer portion of the 857-kilometer border that remains unfenced with barbed wire, Tripura continues to face infiltration issues.
