Shillong, June 5: Meghalaya is already experiencing the effects of climate change, including rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and increasing water scarcity, Chairman of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Environment Rakkam A. Sangma said on World Environment Day.
Speaking after a tree plantation programme at the Assembly premises in Shillong, Sangma said environmental conservation must become a collective responsibility as climate-related challenges continue to affect the state.
“Climate change is increasingly affecting Meghalaya, with rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity and reduced rainfall becoming growing concerns,” he said, urging citizens and communities to actively participate in conservation and afforestation efforts.
The remarks came during a World Environment Day observance organised by the Committee on Environment, where legislators and officials planted around 30 saplings within the Assembly campus as part of efforts to promote environmental awareness and sustainable development.
Sangma said the Committee on Environment would continue to raise issues related to environmental protection and sustainable development and work towards greater public awareness on conservation challenges facing the state.

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma said environmental initiatives should extend beyond symbolic plantation drives and focus on ensuring the survival and growth of planted trees.
“Planting a tree is only the beginning; our responsibility is to ensure that it survives and flourishes,” he said.
The programme was attended by committee members Ollan Singh Suin, Arbinstone B. Marak and Nujorki Sungoh, along with officials of the Assembly Secretariat and the Social Forestry Department.
