Williamnagar, June 5: Concerned over declining soil health and the environmental impact of excessive fertiliser use, agricultural and horticultural officials in East Garo Hills on Friday used World Environment Day to promote natural farming and sustainable agricultural practices among farmers.
The District Horticulture Office, in collaboration with the community of Bolkinggre village under Samanda C&RD Block, organised an awareness programme focusing on the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and natural farming initiatives.

Officials from the District Agriculture Office, scientists from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), and local residents participated in the programme, which stressed the need to reduce indiscriminate fertiliser application and adopt eco-friendly farming methods.
The campaign highlighted growing concerns over soil degradation and sought to encourage farmers to make more judicious use of fertilisers while adopting farm-based bio-inputs to improve soil fertility and crop productivity.
Experts at the programme demonstrated the role of natural farming techniques in reducing dependence on chemical inputs, improving long-term soil health, and enhancing environmental sustainability.
As part of the observance, participants also undertook a plantation drive, planting a mix of environmentally beneficial and medicinal tree species, including nitrogen-fixing varieties such as Cassia fistula and Delonix species, along with neem trees.
Officials said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to link environmental conservation with sustainable agriculture, particularly in rural areas where soil health remains critical to farm productivity and livelihoods.
