Yoga in the heart of the Earth: A soulful session at Meghalaya’s Arwah Cave

Must read

Shillong, June 21: It was a Yoga session in a different setting — one where silence met mindful movement.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI), Shillong, marked International Yoga Day deep inside the Arwah-Lumshynna Cave, a stunning Geo heritage site in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills.

Titled “Yoga Sangam,” the session drew 65 participants — including senior GSI officials, staff, and local residents — who performed yoga against the backdrop of million-year-old limestone formations, fossil-rich walls, and the steady murmur of a cave stream. The atmosphere was surreal, with light rain and fog adding a mystical quality to the early morning practice.

Located around 54 kilometers from Shillong, the Arwah-Lumshynna Cave is known for its breathtaking natural beauty — with ancient stalactites and stalagmites, fossilized fish bones, and narrow passages carved by time. Much larger than the better-known Mawsmai Cave, Arwah is a treasure trove for geologists and a wonder for adventurers.

Leading the session were yoga experts from the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Homoeopathy (NEIAH) — Dr. Irene L. Khongsai, Dr. Persara Langtang, Dr. Sojak Chakma, and Dr. Saveio — who guided participants through a sequence of postures and breathing techniques designed to harmonize body and mind with the primal rhythms of nature.

Simultaneously, another Yoga Sangam unfolded at the GSI Shillong office campus, where 48 participants joined a live telecast followed by a guided session led by Ms. Aruna Sharma, Chemist, GSI-NER. The office event, too, received enthusiastic participation, closing a week-long Yoga Boot Camp that left many feeling recharged and reconnected.

Amid formations millions of years old, the Yoga Sangam served as a serene reminder that true wellness springs from our connection not just to ourselves, but also to the ancient natural world that surrounds and sustains us.
