Imphal, June 21: In the wake of renewed violence targeting farmers, the Manipur government announced the deployment of security personnel in vulnerable farming areas across the state to ensure the safety of cultivators.
The announcement comes a day after two violent incidents were reported from Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts. A woman was killed in Churachandpur, while a farmer was injured in a shooting in Bishnupur.

According to police, Ningthoujam Biren Singh, a cultivator from Phubala Awang Maning Leikai and a member of the Meitei community, was shot in the arm by an unidentified gunman while working in his paddy field at Phubala Maning on Thursday. Singh was rushed to Bishnupur District Hospital and later referred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for advanced treatment.
Following the incident, a joint search operation was launched by security forces in the surrounding areas of Langchingmanbi, Heichanglok, and the western fringes of Phubala village. During the operation, forces reportedly came under fire from unidentified assailants and retaliated accordingly. There have been no reports of casualties from the exchange.

“In light of these attacks, adequate security arrangements will be made to safeguard farmers working in the fields and to prevent further violence,” a senior police official said.
On June 15, a land ownership dispute over a paddy field in Imphal East district triggered unrest, which was brought under control following the deployment of additional security personnel.
