Williamnagar, September 13: The much-awaited 3rd Edition of the Machong Football Tournament, organised by the Balsrigittim Sports Club in collaboration with the Simsanggre Citizens United Club, kicked off today at the newly inaugurated Rongrenggre Football Synthetic Turf—Williamnagar’s first-ever football turf.

The opening ceremony was graced by local MLA, Cabinet Minister, and sole sponsor of the tournament, Marcuise N. Marak, along with Dabo M. Marak, National General Secretary of NPYF; Sengbath Marak, Deputy Chairman of the Regional Planning and Development Council, Tura; and several government officials.

Speaking on the occasion, Dabo M. Marak expressed his happiness to be part of the tournament. He highlighted the difference between Mahari and Machong football tournaments and emphasized the significance of organising events like these for community development.

Sengbath Marak, in his address, thanked the organisers and spectators for supporting the event. He stressed that football tournaments not only entertain but also instill discipline, which is essential in every walk of life. He also extended his gratitude to the local MLA for sponsoring such initiatives in the district.

As the chief guest, Marcuise N. Marak elaborated on the distinction between the Inter-Mahari Football Tournament and the Machong Football Tournament. He urged all participating teams to maintain discipline and play in the true spirit of the game without resorting to fights or agitation.

The opening match in the Chra category showcased Gabil Machong against Manda Machong. After a tough contest, Carrey G. Momin scored the decisive goal, giving Gabil Machong a 1–0 victory.

In the Nok Me•chik category, Mangsang and Napak Machong delivered a thrilling performance. Although Napak’s Ajerik Napak opened the scoring, Mangsang responded strongly with six goals, securing a 6–1 win. The goals came from Irita Mangsang (4), Dodime Mangsang (1), and Wanriliang Mangsang (1).

Tournament convenor Elvister Marak informed Hub News that a total of 24 teams from the Chra category and 8 teams from the Nok Me•chik category are participating this year. The final match is scheduled for October 12, 2025, subject to weather and other conditions.
The winners of the Chra category will receive a cash prize of ₹2 lakhs, while the runners-up will get ₹1.25 lakhs. In the Nok Me•chik category, the winners will be awarded ₹1.25 lakhs, and the runners-up will take home ₹75,000.
