Resubelpara, Jan 21: North Garo Hills on Wednesday joined the rest of the state in celebrating the 54th Meghalaya Statehood Day, with a district-level function held at the Mini Secretariat in Resubelpara.
Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira graced the occasion as chief guest, in the presence of Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, senior officials, dignitaries and representatives of various organisations.
Addressing the gathering, Shira recalled the historic struggle that led to the creation of Meghalaya and said the state’s formation on January 21, 1972, was the outcome of a democratic movement spearheaded by the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) under the leadership of pioneers such as Captain Williamson A. Sangma, Brington Buhai Lyngdoh and Stanley Nichols Roy.

He said Meghalaya’s statehood symbolised the collective aspiration of the hill people for political autonomy, cultural identity and inclusive development, and highlighted the socio-economic progress achieved over the decades in sectors such as infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, health, education and agriculture.
Calling for collective responsibility, the minister urged citizens and stakeholders to work towards building a prosperous, self-reliant and forward-looking Meghalaya.
The celebrations also paid tribute to Captain Williamson A. Sangma, Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister, acknowledging his pivotal role in laying the foundation for the state’s political autonomy and long-term development.
As part of the programme, the district administration felicitated individuals who have brought recognition to North Garo Hills. Taitus Ch. Marak, a renowned mountain biker from the district, was honoured for representing Meghalaya in national-level mountain biking and endurance events. Family members of Late Rev. Omed W. Momin and Late Rev. Ramke W. Momin, among the pioneering missionaries who introduced Christianity in the region, were also felicitated.
In a move aimed at strengthening grassroots livelihoods, members of Cluster Level Federationsi (CLFs) were provided seed kits and farming equipment under the Horticulture Department’s Seed Bank Programme and the Chief Minister’s Catalytic Fund, to promote food security and community-led agricultural production in the district.
Kharkutta MLA Rupert Momin, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini, and M.D. Arengh, representing the Senior Citizen Forum and a former District Horticulture Officer, also addressed the gathering.
