Itanagar, May 12: The body of a 17-year-old boy from Maharashtra, who went missing after being swept away by the strong currents of the Yomgo river earlier this month, was recovered after nine days in Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang district on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Prateshmesh Baswakar, son of Rahul Baswakar and a resident of the ITBP camp at Guminagar in Aalo.

According to officials, the incident occurred on May 3 when a group of 10 minors had gone for a picnic near Bene village in West Siang district.

Five among them went near the riverbank to shoot a video while holding hands. During the process, one of the boys, identified as Prateshmesh Baswakar, jumped into the river and was swept away by the strong current,” an official said.

Following the incident, personnel from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), along with local residents, launched extensive search and rescue operations, but failed to trace him.

Police said the body was eventually found along the riverbank near Dama village in neighbouring Siang district. Local residents alerted the authorities after spotting the body.

An unnatural death case has been registered at Aalo police station, and further investigation is underway.
