Guwahati, Aug 8: Chaos unfolded on Guwahati’s busy GS Road on Thursday afternoon when a pickpocket was caught red-handed, allegedly stealing Rs 55,000 from a passenger inside a Green Line city bus near the Bhangagarh bus stop.
The accused, identified as Abdul Ali, reportedly tried to flee after slipping the cash out of a fellow passenger’s pocket — but he didn’t get far. Alert co-passengers and bystanders chased him down, caught him mid-escape, and tied him to a roadside pole before unleashing a brutal beating.

A video of the incident, now circulating on social media, shows the accused bound to the pole, surrounded by an angry crowd. Some men are seen pulling their hair and slapping him repeatedly as others shout in fury.
The victim, a man from Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district, had travelled to Guwahati with money saved for his son’s eye treatment at a private hospital. “I was on the bus, and he was sitting right next to me. Suddenly, he took my money and ran. Luckily, people caught him before he could escape,” the victim said, visibly shaken.
According to eyewitnesses, the mob continued thrashing the man until personnel from Dispur police station arrived and took him into custody.
The police have initiated an investigation, and the man is being questioned.
