BJP eyes hat-trick in Assam, faces heat from dissidents

Must read

Guwahati, March 23: The BJP is aiming for a hat-trick in Assam, but faces challenges from dissident leaders denied party tickets for the upcoming Assembly polls.

Among the prominent dissenters are Jayanta Kumar Das and Nandita Garlosa. After being denied a BJP ticket, Garlosa joined the Congress and filed her nomination from the Haflong constituency. Das, meanwhile, has entered the fray as an Independent candidate from Dispur.

Former BJP MLA from Katigorah, Amar Chand Jain, also switched to the Congress after being denied a ticket and has filed his nomination from the same constituency on a Congress ticket.

“Nandita Garlosa was a minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet but was denied a ticket this time. She joined the Congress soon after. The BJP has introduced new faces in several seats. Jayanta Kumar Das, a senior BJP leader who had been seeking a ticket from Dispur, was also denied, with the party fielding Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the BJP,” said an observer.

Several senior BJP leaders have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the candidate selection process. Leaders such as Siddhartha Bhattacharjee and Atul Bora were among those denied tickets.

In Sivasagar, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) initially fielded Prodip Hazarika as the AGP-BJP alliance candidate.

However, the BJP later fielded Kushal Dowari from the same seat, leading to a friendly contest within the alliance. Both candidates are set to face Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi.

“The BJP is aiming for a hat-trick in Assam, but dissent among leaders who have either rebelled or switched sides could pose challenges. Friendly contests in some seats may also complicate matters, though the party is trying to manage the situation,” a political observer said.

He added, “How the BJP navigates these challenges will be crucial in the upcoming polls. It will not be easy in constituencies where candidates have been changed and dissent remains a factor. How the party manages this will be interesting to watch.”
