Congress zeroed in Meghalaya: Ronnie V. Lyngdoh resigns, set to join NPP

Must read

SHILLONG, July 30: Mylliem MLA Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has officially tendered his resignation from the Indian National Congress on Wednesday.

The resignation letter was submitted before Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, former Mylliem MLA Hamletson Dohling, and NPP leader Daniel M. Thangkhiew.

Lyngdoh is now set to join the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), becoming the fourth Congress legislator to defect to the party. Earlier, on August 19, 2024, Congress MLAs Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh, Gabriel Wahlang, and Charles Marngar had also merged with the NPP. Their merger was officially recognised by the Speaker under provisions allowing such a move with a two-thirds majority.

With Lyngdoh’s entry, the NPP is poised to become the single largest party in the Meghalaya Assembly with 33 elected MLAs.

Congress is now completely unrepresented in the Meghalaya Assembly – holding zero MLAs.
