Guwahati, July 3: Sukanya Sonowal, a final-year B.Tech student in Biosciences and Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has been selected as a Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador—a prestigious leadership role under the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN) Executive Committee.
The Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network operates across 56 member nations, empowering youth to promote peace, tolerance, and intercultural understanding while countering violent extremism. Sukanya will serve as Lead – Communications & Public Relations for the 2025–2027 term.

Congratulating her on this achievement, IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said, “We are immensely proud of Ms. Sukanya Sonowal. Her selection as a Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador reflects her dedication to social impact and leadership. We are confident that she will inspire many others to engage in meaningful, globally relevant initiatives.”
A native of Assam’s Lakhimpur district, Sukanya was chosen through a rigorous three-stage selection process involving an initial application and two rounds of interviews. Applicants were evaluated on their peacebuilding efforts, commitment to Commonwealth values, leadership experience, and community service.
Sukanya’s selection is backed by years of active involvement in communication and outreach initiatives. She has played a key role in Techniche, IIT Guwahati’s flagship techno-management festival, as part of the Media and Branding team. Her communication skills and leadership experience made her a strong fit for the CYPAN role.

She is also the co-founder of STEMvibe – STEM for Viksit Bharat Empowerment, a nationwide outreach initiative that promotes Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. The platform has engaged over 3,000 participants across India. In addition, Sukanya leads The Integral Cup, a national-level mathematics competition for undergraduates, which drew more than 2,500 participants in its debut edition.
Her ability to lead large-scale campaigns and foster international collaborations with organisations like Optiver, Qube Research & Technologies, and Jane Street further strengthened her credentials.
Expressing her excitement, Sukanya said, “I am deeply honored to represent India and IIT Guwahati on this global platform. This opportunity reaffirms my belief that communication is a powerful tool for positive change. From campus volunteering to international initiatives, every experience has shaped my purpose. I hope more students step beyond their academic boundaries—the skills we gain can help us become global citizens equipped to tackle humanity’s biggest challenges.”
