Imphal Erupts in Silent Protest: Outrage Over Brutal Killings in Jiribam and Rising Violence in Manipur

Must read

Imphal, Nov 23: A silent sit-in protest was held on Saturday at Kesihampat in Imphal West, condemning the brutal killing of innocent children and a woman in Jiribam district. The protest, organized by senior citizens and various civil society organizations, demanded justice for the victims and called for immediate measures to restore peace in the state.

Addressing the media, retired police officer Thanhjam Brojen criticized the reliance on increased deployment of central forces, emphasizing that their effectiveness depends on proper strategic utilization. “Deploying more companies of central forces will not resolve the ongoing issues. It is imperative that those in authority reassert state control and address the violence strategically,” he said.

Brojen also questioned the absence of a clear plan for utilizing the additional forces and highlighted the lack of coherent strategies to contain the unrest.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh strongly condemned the attacks on the residences of ministers and MLAs during recent agitations. “I have condemned these acts before. Those who are genuinely agitating against the killings of innocent people have our support because everyone has the right to democratically express their grievances. However, in the guise of democratic movements, certain groups have looted and burned ministers’ houses and stolen properties, which is unacceptable,” Singh stated.

He informed that a sizable number of these forces have already arrived, with more on the way.

Singh also revealed that security forces have recovered 3,000 arms looted during the ethnic violence that erupted in May last year. He assured that the additional forces would be strategically stationed in sensitive, fringe, and mixed-population areas to prevent further escalation of violence.
