Imphal, May 27: In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, Manipur security forces arrested three suspected drug smugglers and seized contraband substances along with over Rs 1.17 crore in cash during operations carried out over the past 36 hours.
In the first operation, conducted near the India-Myanmar border between Haichin and Suangdoh villages under Singngat Police Station in Churachandpur district, two individuals were apprehended. The suspects, identified as Nangkhauthiu (47) of Sehjang village and Tuangpu Guite (41) of Gaugpimual village, both in Churachandpur, were found in possession of Rs 1,17,30,600 in cash. Police confirmed their arrest was linked to ongoing investigations into drug smuggling networks operating along the porous border.
In a separate operation in Bishnupur district, Manipur Police arrested a woman identified as Najima (42), wife of Mohammed Mahanddin of Kwakta Ward No. 6. She was detained from Nachou Panthong under Bishnupur Police Station. Authorities seized 13 soap cases containing approximately 152 grams of suspected heroin (excluding packaging weight), along with two mobile phones and an Aadhar card.
Manipur, part of the Golden Triangle, has long struggled with drug trafficking routes that date back to the 1970s. The formalization of border trade in the 1990s has further complicated enforcement efforts, with many people being drawn into the illicit trade. Investigations are ongoing.
