Guwahati, June 9: A joint team comprising the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Customs, 17 Bn Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police seized a massive consignment of narcotics during a three-day special operation codenamed “Operation White Veil” in the border areas of Churachandpur district in Manipur.

The operation, conducted from June 5 to 7, led to the recovery of 7,755.75 grams of heroin valued at approximately ₹54.29 crore and 6,736 grams of opium worth ₹87.57 lakh in the international grey market. Authorities also seized ₹35.63 lakh in cash, two Baofeng walkie-talkies, and a Maruti Eeco van. Five individuals were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

In the early hours of June 6, a suspicious Maruti Eeco van was discreetly followed to a residence in Thadou Veng, Singngat Sub-Division, where officials seized 219 soap cases of heroin and opium stored in eight packets and 18 tin cans. One individual was arrested on the spot, while two others who fled were later intercepted at Bualkot Check Gate.

A follow-up search at a residence in Behiang Village led to the recovery of two more opium packages and ₹28.05 lakh in cash.

On June 7, based on fresh inputs, two suspects carrying improvised manpacks were intercepted at Zoukhonuam Village near Border Pillar 46. The packs contained 440 soap cases of heroin.

Preliminary investigation suggests the contraband originated from Myanmar and was smuggled through the porous Indo-Myanmar forested border into Churachandpur district.

The accused now face charges under the NDPS Act, which carries punishment of up to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for such offences.
