Shilllong, July 13: The Meghalaya Canoe Association has set the stage for a strong performance at the National Games with participants’ exhibiting rapid skill development and disciplined approach.
The association from July 10–12 hosted a comprehensive 3-day kayaking summer camp at Whitewater Village, Umtham, Ri-Bhoi, aimed at selecting suitable athletes from various districts of Meghalaya for advanced training in preparation for the National Games in canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.
The camp attracted 19 young athletes (15 boys and 4 girls, aged 12–19) from West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Williamnagar, and Tura districts of Garo Hills, reflecting the Association’s commitment to nurturing water sports talent statewide.

Under the expert leadership of coach Ian Vincent, with organizational support from his wife, Sheela, the camp was designed to evaluate athletes’ skills through diverse, targeted sessions. In moving water, participants practiced ferry gliding, draw stroke, leaning, navigating kayaks through dynamic currents, and catching eddies—skills essential for river navigation that tested precision, balance, and quick decision-making. On flat water, sprint races assessed speed, endurance, and paddling proficiency, providing insights into each athlete’s competitive potential.
Despite limited water time, participants mastered foundational strokes, including the draw, sweep, and forward strokes. Navigating kayaks in a straight line proved challenging, requiring significant coordination, but the athletes’ rapid progress showcased their dedication and adaptability.
The athletes demonstrated exceptional discipline, courtesy, and enthusiasm, quickly adapting to the rigorous training regimen despite varying levels of prior experience. This diverse group fostered a collaborative environment, supporting one another while following Ian’s instructions diligently.
Challenges such as limited water time, unfamiliar equipment, and differing skill levels were effectively managed through Ian’s intensive, personalized coaching, ensuring each athlete could maximize their potential within the camp’s short duration.
The camp successfully identified promising athletes for further training, laying a strong foundation for Meghalaya’s representation at the National Games. The Whitewater Village proved to be an ideal training venue, offering a conducive environment for skill assessment and development.
Ian’s leadership and vision for elevating Meghalaya’s standing in canoeing, kayaking, and rafting were evident in the camp’s structured, results-driven approach.
