Shillong, Aug 29: Meghalaya marked National Sports Day with a state-wide celebration that honoured 136 athletes and 22 coaches who participated in the recent 6th Meghalaya Games. On the occasion, the government also distributed cheques worth ₹45 lakh to 103 beneficiaries under its flagship YESS Meghalaya initiative.

The event, organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, was held simultaneously in Shillong and Tura, highlighting the state’s commitment to nurturing young talent and strengthening sports infrastructure.
Launched in 2022 under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, YESS Meghalaya provides financial support to youth organisations, societies, and NGOs. The programme is aimed at empowering young people through awareness campaigns, education, and activities that build leadership and community participation.
Addressing the gathering in Shillong, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri said National Sports Day was a reminder of the government’s focus on fitness, inclusivity, and youth empowerment. “Since 2018, despite many challenges, the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs has achieved major milestones. Our objective is to be able to produce local athletes for the next Olympic Games,” he said.

Warjri pointed to the consistent success of the Meghalaya Games as evidence of a growing sports culture in the state. He emphasised government efforts to improve infrastructure, provide professional coaching, and instill values of discipline and commitment among young athletes. He urged youth to take advantage of every opportunity and actively engage with government programmes to realise their potential.
The Minister also announced the launch of Megha Fit Phase 1, a fitness initiative with an investment of over ₹20 lakh, aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle. He further revealed that the government has sanctioned ₹100 crore for dedicated sports hostels to nurture young talent. “The money spent is not mere expenditure but an investment to empower sports associations and the youth as a whole,” Warjri said.
In Tura, the event was graced by Nipon Hajong, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, who underscored the transformative power of sports in fostering unity, health, and well-being.
As part of the celebrations, athletes across both venues also took a pledge to uphold the values of discipline, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
