“Never heard of it before”: Manik Saha’s NCPI remark adds intrigue to party at centre of TMC rebellion

Must read

Agartala/New Delhi, June 15: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha’s candid admission that he had never heard of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) before seeing it in news reports has added a fresh layer of intrigue to a little-known political outfit that has suddenly found itself at the centre of a national political storm.

Reacting to reports surrounding the NCPI, Saha remarked that although the party had reportedly contested the previous Tripura Assembly elections, it had never figured prominently in the state’s political discourse.

“I saw it in the news. I had never heard of this party before. I saw reports that they had contested the Assembly elections. I did not know about it. Who brings these people here and who is backing them, who knows? Let’s see what happens,” the Chief Minister said.

His comments come at a time when the NCPI has emerged from relative obscurity to become a key player in one of the most dramatic political developments in recent years.

The party, which has roots in Tripura and maintained a low-profile presence for years, shot into the national spotlight after a group of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs announced their decision to merge with or align through the NCPI while extending support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The development has triggered intense speculation in political circles, with observers describing it as a strategic move that could significantly alter parliamentary equations and deepen the crisis within Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress.

What has surprised many political observers is that the vehicle chosen for the realignment is not a major national party but a relatively unknown organisation that had largely remained outside mainstream political conversations. Even in Tripura, where the party had contested elections, its public visibility remained limited.

The NCPI’s sudden rise has prompted questions across the political spectrum.

How did a little-known regional outfit become the preferred platform for one of the largest parliamentary rebellions in recent times? Who facilitated the move? And what role will the party play as national politics heads towards another crucial electoral cycle?

Political analysts believe the choice of the NCPI may not be accidental. Reports suggest that the arrangement provides a political platform for the rebel MPs while preserving their collective strength in Parliament and positioning them within the broader NDA ecosystem.

The rebellion has already sent shockwaves through the Trinamool Congress. Several prominent MPs are reportedly part of the rebel camp, intensifying questions over the party’s internal cohesion and future parliamentary strategy.

Against this backdrop, Saha’s remark has resonated beyond Tripura because it reflects the surprise with which many in political circles have viewed the NCPI’s meteoric rise.

Until recently, it was a party that barely registered in national political conversations.

Today, it finds itself at the heart of a political realignment that could reshape opposition politics and strengthen the NDA’s numbers in Parliament.

For now, as Manik Saha put it, political observers across the country are watching and waiting to see what happens next.
