Guwahati, April 26: Assam Police on Saturday ruled out any kidnapping in the case of a 27-year-old Guwahati-based school teacher who had gone missing and was later traced in Shillong, stating that she had left home on her own amid mental distress.

Addressing the media, West Guwahati Additional Superintendent of Police Maytri Deka said the investigation has found no indication of abduction or criminal involvement.

According to her, the woman’s movements and statements suggest she travelled independently without any external threat.

Police said the teacher stepped out of her residence around 10:30 am on Friday and booked a two-wheeler ride to AEC Point. From there, she walked to an ATM in Jalukbari and withdrew Rs 7,000 before continuing her journey.

She later boarded a state-run bus to Paltan Bazar and then hired a cab to Shillong, where she checked into a hotel and stayed overnight alone.

Investigators also clarified that she had switched off her phone during this period due to emotional distress. “There was no threat to her safety. She had turned off her phone as she was mentally exhausted,” Deka said.

Police further dismissed any allegations against ride-hailing or transport services, stating that no wrongdoing by drivers or platforms has emerged during the probe.

Referring to the distress message sent to her family before she went incommunicado, officials said it appeared to have been triggered by emotional strain rather than any real danger.

The teacher, a resident of Tetelia and formerly associated with a school near Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, was traced in Shillong’s Polo area on Saturday morning.

While confirming that she is now safe, police said the exact personal reasons behind her actions are still under examination. The investigation is being carried out jointly by Assam Police and the Special Task Force.
