ONGC crisis management team races to contain blowout in Assam

Must read

Dibrugarh, June 13: A high-level emergency response has been launched to control a massive gas leak following an explosion at the RDS#147A well near Bhotiapar in the Rudrasagar oil field, located in Assam’s Sivasagar district.

The incident occurred on Wednesday (June 12), when a powerful blast rocked the ONGC-operated 147 No. Rig, sending shockwaves across nearby villages and triggering panic among residents. The explosion was followed by a continuous and deafening release of natural gas, reportedly audible up to 3–4 kilometres away.

Frightened villagers fled their homes fearing further explosions, even as emergency response teams rushed to the site.

The Crisis Management Team of ONGC has since mobilized at the location, laying out essential equipment in preparation for good control. Well-controlled required fluids for the subdue operation have been made ready, and the next step in operation is expected to start at daybreak tomorrow. Given the Givenf gas, entry to the location is being restricted to the concerned operational personnel only,” ONGC said in a statement.

While no injuries have been reported so far, the situation remains tense, with residents demanding immediate action and assurances of safety from both ONGC and the district administration.

Efforts to cap the uncontrolled gas flow are expected to intensify on Friday.
