Tura, Jan 31: Former GHADC Chairman Rakesh A. Sangma on Monday morning won the election for the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the District Council by securing 15 votes.
His opponent, Benedic Marak secured 13 votes.
Benedic Marak had to resign as the CEM on Saturday (January 29, 2022) following his defeat in the No Confidence Motion against him by NPP MDCs.
Benedic Marak was elected as NPP MDC but has rebelled against the NPP to be with the All India Trinamool Congress Party (AITC). He, however, hasn’t resigned as an NPP member, yet.
Rakesh Sangma is NPP’s MDC from Babelapara. He had resigned as the Chairman of GHADC on Saturday to contest for the CEM election after Marak was defeated in the No Confidence MotionThe fall of Benedic Marak as CEM
The GHADC has been in turmoil after the resignation of 9 Executive Members (EMs) from their respective posts in the GHADC Executive Committee last week citing lack of confidence in the now dethroned CEM Benedic R Marak, whom they accused of aligning with the opposition Trinamool.
Benedic had remained adamant, refusing to step down. In fact, he had rewarded three Trinamool MDCs to positions of Chairmanship that were left vacant by NPP MDCs who tendered their resignation and abandoned his side.
Following the development, Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on January 27, 2022, ordered for a special session of the council to hold a No-Confidence Motion (NCM) on Saturday January 29, 2022, against the Executive Committee. He had also asked the Chairman to ensure video recording of the entire proceedings and forwarding the same to the Governor through the District Council Affairs Department.
