Shillong, March 11: The district administration of South West Garo Hills has prohibited the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles and other containers with immediate effect, citing rising tensions linked to the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.
The order was issued by District Magistrate Kum. Anendya Raajsshre, as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential disruption of law and order in the district.
According to the administration, the restriction has been imposed in view of the escalating tension reported in parts of the Garo Hills region ahead of the GHADC elections scheduled for April 10, 2026.
The directive, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), will remain in force until further orders.
Under the order, the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles or other containers is strictly prohibited across the South West Garo Hills district. The move aims to prevent the misuse of fuel that could potentially threaten public safety during the sensitive pre-election period.
The order also states that any violation will attract legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant provisions of the law.
However, the administration clarified that diesel supply for essential services such as mobile towers and road construction companies will continue in accordance with existing orders issued by the Deputy Commissioner (Supply).
