Shillong-Dawki four-laning project on track, Western Bypass hits land snags

Must read

Shillong, June 24: Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the Public Works Department (Roads), on Monday reviewed the progress of several crucial road projects, including the four-laning of Shillong-Dawki road and the Shillong Western Bypass. These projects, implemented by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), are central to improving connectivity in and around the Shillong city.

Tynsong expressed satisfaction with the Shillong-Dawki road project, noting that work is advancing well despite the ongoing challenges posed by the monsoon rains. He remained confident that NHIDCL will meet its 2026 completion deadline as stipulated in the contract.

“I have seen the work is progressing well. Of course, we do have problems because of the rain, but I am very sure they will be able to reach the target as already stipulated in the work order,” Tynsong told reporters after the review meeting. He has directed NHIDCL to accelerate work to ensure timely completion, with progress also noted on packages at Pynursla.

In contrast, the Shillong Western Bypass project is encountering significant hurdles related to land ownership disputes. Tynsong revealed that several individuals are claiming ownership of land earmarked for the bypass.

To address these issues, he has instructed all district collectors to resolve the claims promptly. He emphasized that those making claims must provide proper documentation, warning against unsubstantiated demands. “I have given direction to all district collectors to resolve this issue and make sure progress of work is not affected,” Tynsong stated. Despite these challenges, the deadline for the Western Bypass remains set for 2026.

Beyond these two critical projects, the Deputy Chief Minister also reviewed other major road initiatives such as the Speed Corridor and Tura Bypass.

The ambitious survey for the new Speed Corridor, stretching from Barapani, Umiam, to the Assam border, is almost complete. District collectors are working with NHIDCL to finalize the road’s centerline, with good progress reported across Ri Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills districts. Most land-related consultations with landowners and traditional heads are largely finalized.

The proposed Tura bypass, extending to Dalu, is also moving forward. Deputy Commissioners of West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills are currently preparing the 3D notification for the project. The commencement and completion dates for the Tura bypass are yet to be finalized.
