Agartala, Aug 2: Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday alleged that the party’s national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee was “attacked by BJP workers” while he was returning to Agartala after offering puja to the famous Tripureswari temple in southern Tripura’s Udaipur.
While talking to the media in Agartala, Banerjee said BJP workers attacked his car with lathi and bamboo sticks in which three of his security personnel from Kolkata were also injured.
“To obstruct my travel to Tripureswari temple in Udaipur, frequent road blockades were organised and even school students were also used in the road blockade,” the TMC General Secretary said.
TMC leader Subal Bhowmik, who along with other leaders on Friday quit Congress and joined the West Bengal’s ruling party, claimed that the “BJP goons accompanied by the party workers organised road blockade and attacked Banerjee.”
“When BJP workers and their goons were attacking the car and convoy of Banerjee on his way to southern Tripura and returning to Agartala, the police remained a silent spectator,” said Bhowmik, who earlier quit the BJP before joining the Congress in 2019.
TMC’s Twitter handle shared some videos and also posted: “Such blatant state-sponsored attacks on democracy can only be seen in BJP ruled states! Last night in Agartala, posters of AITC and Shri Abhishek Banerjee were torn. Did the BJP Tripura govt. allow this? Will strict action be taken against the miscreants ?”
West Tripura district Superintendent of Police Manik Lal Das said, “I have no knowledge about any attack on Banerjee. Some people might have given the slogan when he was moving from Agartala to Udaipur or Udaipur to Agartala.”
The district police chief said that regarding the tearing of TMC’s posters, police are probing the matter.
Denying TMC’s allegations, BJP’s Gomati District Committee (southern Tripura) President Abhisek Debroy said that the party workers led by the leaders on Monday organised rallies and other events to highlight the successful implementation of the central schemes in Tripura and success of Covid-19 vaccination.
“It might be a TMC’s conspiracy to accuse BJP as no party workers obstructed or attacked Banerjee during his visit to southern Tripura and return to Agartala,” Debroy told the media.
