Agartala, June 13: The Tripura government has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the newly redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple—one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas—located in Udaipur town of Gomati district.
The 524-year-old shrine, a major religious and cultural landmark established in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, has undergone a major redevelopment at a cost of over ₹52 crore. Of this, the state government contributed ₹7 crore, according to officials.
“Chief Minister Manik Saha has been making efforts to ensure the Prime Minister himself inaugurates the temple,” an official source said. Udaipur is located about 65 km south of the state capital, Agartala.
The Tripura Sundari temple is considered the third most important Shakti Peetha in eastern India after the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata and the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati. It draws thousands of devotees from across the region and beyond, especially during Diwali and other major festivals.
Highlighting the temple’s cultural and spiritual importance, officials said the Prime Minister’s presence at the inauguration would reflect the national recognition of Tripura’s heritage.
In a further boost to spiritual tourism, the Union Ministry of Tourism has recently sanctioned ₹97.7 crore for the development of a 51-Shakti Peethas Park at Banduar in southern Tripura aimed at preserving and promoting India’s spiritual heritage.
