SHILLONG, JAN 29: UDP legislator Mayralborn Syiem has defended the progress of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road project.
“Till now on record I am saying the progress of work is satisfactory,” Syiem told reporters on Wednesday.
Speaking about the project, Syiem stated, “The foundation stone of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road was laid on December 10, 2024. Soon after MDC election, the work has been initiated with a request to the contractor – Dhar construction, to expedite the project as soon as possible.”
Syiem appreciated the contractor’s efforts, saying, “I appreciate on record the contractor for initiating the work at the right time and he didn’t stop even a single day since he started the work. The whole summer, work is on…”
Addressing concerns about discrepancies, Syiem said, “We cannot rule out as there will be some discrepancies as it is such a big project. We cannot forget 99.5% good work instead of flashing a small fraction of discrepancies to tarnish the image of the department, contractor.”
Syiem urged citizens to verify information and report concerns constructively, stating, “My request to all citizens to see properly and verify properly. If anything is there, give in writing or come to me as MLA or talk to the contractor – that is the civilize way of doing things.”
Regarding public property, Syiem emphasized, “The road is a public property. No one has any right to just go and destroy like that. This is public money and road is public property. We have no right to interfere like that.”
“I thanked those concerned people who have raised this issue. It has been an eye opener not only to the people involved in this project. We have to be very cautious in the days to come. If there is anything, we should come to the table to discuss and come to a conclusion for the benefit of each and everyone of us,” he stated further.
