Aizawl, Nov 12: Authorities in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district have launched an investigation into a suspected waterborne disease outbreak that has claimed five lives—four in Myanmar’s Salachhuah village and one in Kakichhuah village on the Indian side.
A review meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga was held on Wednesday at the DC office to assess the situation and coordinate response measures. Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte, Senior Chief Medical Officer, was among those present.
Expressing deep concern over the loss of lives, DC Lalruatsanga stressed the need for swift and coordinated action. He said intensive efforts are underway to identify the source of the illness and prevent further spread. “All preventive and control measures must be strictly implemented,” he emphasized, expressing hope that the situation would be brought under control soon.

According to Dr. Jongte, cases have been reported since November 4, prompting a medical team to visit Kakichhuah village on November 11 for investigation. Water samples were collected and sent to Zoram Medical College and Hospital for laboratory testing. Preliminary findings suggest that the infection may have originated from nearby Salachhuah village in Myanmar.
“Of those examined, 27 individuals were found to be infected, most of them aged between 5 and 63 years. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been deployed, and a local health worker is closely monitoring the situation,” Dr. Jongte said.
Authorities have urged residents to ensure safe drinking water, maintain sanitation, and increase health awareness to prevent further spread. The road connecting Kakichhuah and Salachhuah will remain under strict monitoring, while Kakichhuah has been declared a containment area for one week. Entry and exit are restricted, except for medical, election, and emergency services.
