Assam and Meghalaya Forest Dept celebrate World Elephant Day in NGH, organise friendly football match

Resubelpara, Aug 12: The forest department from Assam and Meghalaya celebrated World Elephant Day on Friday (August 11) at Thakurbilla, North Garo Hills.

Although, World elephant Day is celebrated on August 12th every year, but this year was celebrated a day before the exact date due to some unavoidable circumstances.

The programme was graced by Kharindra Choudury, Goalpara DC as the chief guest. Other dignitaries who were present at the event included- Rakesh Reddy,IPS, SP Goalpara, S.N.Sangma, IFS Conservator, Garo Hills Region,Tura, Jude Rangku T Sangma,MCS, ADC North Garo Hills, Satish K.S,IFS DFO Williamnagar, Rupanker K Marak,MFS, DFO, Wildlife Division,Tura and also ACFs, Range Officers from both Goalpara and Garo Hills.

This programme was dedicated towards the conservation and protection of elephants and to share knowledge and positive solutions for a better care and management of elephants.

The programme was also attended by the people from the border villages residing along the Assam- Meghalaya and also took part in the various competitions that was organised by the department as a part of World Elephant Day celebration.

As a goodwill gesture Torch lights were distributed to the villagers from both Assam and Meghalaya forest department.

Also, appreciation certificates were distributed to villagers from both the states who are engaged in helping the department in conservation of wildlife and its habitat.

An Awareness by way of IEC materials to mitigate man-elephant conflict were also made.

This programme was supported by Aaranyak NGO, who has been working for the conservation of elephants and wildlife.

To end the programme, a Friendly football match was held between DFO Goalpara Division, Assam and Garo Hills Forest department was organised.

The DFO Goalpara scored 4 goals whereas the Garo Hills division could score only 2 goals.

The Trophy has been named as “Elephant Cup” named after World Elephant’s Day and this football match will be played annually.
