Tura, Dec 10: In a significant development against crime in the region, East Garo Hills police team in coordination with North Garo hills and West Khasi Hills police conducted counter insurgency operations in the areas bordering North Garo Hills and Hahim area and apprehended two persons who were using the banned GNLA outfit name to extort money from businessmen and traders.
The two extortionists were arrested in connection with an extortion case registered in Rongjeng Police station.
Recently a businessman from Mangsang village of East Garo Hills, located on the border with West Khasi Hills, was served with a demand note of Rs 50 lakhs in the name of the GNLA.
Today, on Friday, the extortionists had ask the businessman to deliver the ransom money at Hahim bazaar. But instead of getting their hands on the money, they received handcuffs as a police team waited for them and apprehended them on arrival at the bazaar.
Police have also seized the mobile phones used to contact the victim.
The two apprehended persons are being brought to Rongjeng Police Station for further investigation.
