Dibrugarh: Tinsukia police on Saturday arrested United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) ULFA (I) commander Rupam Asom from the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border during a targeted operation.
According to sources, Rupam Asom and his team had been hiding in a jungle along the border, allegedly planning new militant activities. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a police team launched a search operation and apprehended him. Arms and ammunition were recovered from his possession.

“Rupam Asom is the key figure behind the extortion network that has been active in the Bordumsa and Tinsukia regions. His activities have posed a consistent threat to law enforcement in eastern Assam for several years,” a police source said.
He is also the prime suspect in the killing of Bordumsa Officer-in-Charge Bhaskar Kalita during a militant ambush in 2018. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had earlier charge-sheeted seven ULFA (I) insurgents, including Rupam Asom and Arunodoi Dahotia, in connection with the case.
The police have intensified search operations in bordering areas to trace other members of the ULFA (I) group who may still be at large.
