Assam forester arrested with illegal possession of animal parts

Kamrup, Nov 10: Assam police on Wednesday arrested a forest official along with animal body parts in Kamrup district in western Assam.Police, who made the raid along with forest officials, found deer skin, a bag full of Porcupine facial bone and thorns, a small piece of bone which might be from a turtle shell from the residence of Arup Baishya, a forester, at Sanpara Parbat, Bongshar, Suwalkuchi area, about 34 km north on the other bank of Brahmaputra River from Guwahati.Police said that it had made the discoveries in the presence of the local Gaon Bura and village people.

“A search operation was done inside his house and we seized one double barrel gun, one single barrel gun, two live gecko lizards, both used and unused cartridges, animal catching net, hammer, hard drink bottles, Assamese dao,” mentioned a police statement.According to police, the apprehended body parts may fetch a few lakhs in the international market.

“We are further investigating into his other links and the probable buyers… There may be a nexus within the department too which we are investigating. Police is trying to get custody to interrogate him further,” said a source.

The forests in and around the greater Guwahati city that comprises of the urban areas in Kamrup and Kamrup metro districts are frequented mostly by small animals like porcupine and deer along with leopard and elephant.
