Tura, Aug 29: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the newly constructed building of Mibonpara Secondary School in South Garo Hills.

The event was attended by Chokpot MLA Sengchim Sangma, MDCs, former legislators, senior officials, and community leaders.

Speaking at the programme, the Chief Minister reiterated that education remains a top priority for the state government. He highlighted that out of Meghalaya’s ₹30,000 crore annual budget, ₹2,500 crore is allocated to the education sector—making it the single largest investment area.

“Education has always been a priority for us because we believe that real progress and development can only be achieved through education and the strengthening of our human resources,” Sangma said.

He noted that nearly 50 per cent of Meghalaya’s population is below the age of 20, stressing the need for policies and schemes focused on developing youth potential. Over the past few years, he added, the government has invested about ₹1,000 crore in developing, renovating, and building government schools across the state.

Acknowledging the challenges in the education sector, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to transformative changes. “Through the concerted efforts of the government, leaders, officials and the community, we can overcome challenges and bring positive changes in our education system,” he said.

Sangma also spoke on the strategic importance of Chokpot in terms of connectivity, informing that the World Bank-funded Deku–Chokpot road project has been sanctioned, while the Chokpot–Sibbari road will also be taken up soon.

Concluding his address, the Chief Minister encouraged students to remain committed to their studies while cherishing their roots. “You are the future and the hope of the state, the nation-builders who will take Meghalaya and the country to greater heights,” he said.
